Fertility and Acupuncture

So, you’ve spent your entire life trying not to get pregnant, and have finally decided that the time is right (or as close to right as possible, after measuring out the exact date of conception that will allow you to attend your sister’s wedding, miss your partner’s family reunion, and have a perfect Aries child). Sadly, a large number of couples find that their pregnancy is not occurring as quickly or easily as they had hoped. Rather than resort to IVF (in-vitro fertilization), women can consider acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that focuses on trying to balance qi (pronounced “chee”) energy flowing through the body along a series of energetic lines called meridians. When the free flow of energy is disrupted, the body becomes less able to carry out all of its physiological functions. A trained acupuncturist can strengthen the body, and can tailor treatment to work with each individual’s concerns and imbalances—including imbalances leading to infertility.

The redirection and movement of qi, or energy, is created by inserting fine needles into the skin along specific meridians. The points used in treatment, again, are carefully chosen by the practitioner to treat the particular individual’s imbalance. Most people report that the needle insertion is not painful and that an acupuncture treatment can be a deeply relaxing experience. Each treatment takes about an hour. Once the needles have been inserted, the client rests in a warm, quiet room and relaxes.
