Kristen Bell's Naturally Dyed Rainbow Grilled Cheese Is Giving Us Something To Smile About

In a world full of rainbow-colored foods, it's easy to run to artificial dyes to get the perfect hue. But Kristen Bell's rainbow grilled cheese recipe uses all natural dying techniques to get a gorgeous looking sandwich.

Rainbow-colored foods have been decorating our Instagram feeds for a while now, and considering how pretty they are, we have absolutely zero complaints. Kristen Bell is the latest celeb to jump on the ROYGBIV bandwagon, and not only does she make a gorgeous-looking rainbow grilled cheese sandwich, but she does it using all-natural food dyes.

We absolutely adore Bell and her efforts at making this food trend a little more natural, and now we can make a groovy-looking grilled cheese and still feel great about it!

Want to try it out for yourself? Use this tutorial from Joey Graceffa to make your own, and instead of adding the artificial food dyes, try out Bell's natural hacks.

Happy grill-cheesing!

Step 1: Gather shredded cheese (mozzarella/cheddar/whatever you want!), bread, butter, beet juice, purple cabbage juice, and baking soda.

Step 2: Separate the cheese into four separate bowls.

Step 3: Now is the time to create your dyes! In this tutorial, Joey chose blue, green, red, orange, and purple food colorings. However, if you're looking to use Bell's dye technique, color the separate bowls of cheese using the following natural ingredients:

  • To get a bright red color, use beet juice.
  • To get the purple color, boil purple cabbage juice
  • To make blue, boil the purple cabbage juice and add baking soda.

Stir in each of the dyes to their respective bowls. Bell used cheddar cheese on her sandwich and let one of the bowls remain un-dyed, keeping it the natural orange color of the cheese.

Step 4: Sprinkle the cheeses into four rows, separating the different colors on the bread.

Step 5: Butter the outside of both pieces of bread.

Step 6: Cook your colorful sandwich on the stove until the cheese is melted all the way through.

Step 7: Cut in half and enjoy!
