A Growing Epidemic
When at school, you are taught to come into the classroom, sit down, fold your hands, and listen to someone drone out 1+1=2, 2+2=4, 4+4=8, but what if you can’t do that? We come from all walks of life, have different personalities, and are taught in different ways. What if you come from a family with a little more flavor or you’re a mover and shaker or you have A.D.D., then what?
Are you destined to roam the halls looking for a place to fit? Do you cut school or even worse, join a gang? What are the options for these children? No longer can we allow them to fall through the cracks because of an outdated school system that refuses to take these kids into consideration. These “troublemakers” as they are sometimes called are the ones who do not fit into a “nice little package.” Is this their fault?
Our society has changed drastically; this means that our school system needs to as well. Why should our children be punished because they are different, because they don’t want and have been taught not to conform? Our society tells them that it’s okay to be different everywhere but in school, where it matters most.
We test them on things that are not important and do not supply them with the tools needed to be successful in life. What’s wrong with this picture? We need to take a stand against this growing epidemic before it’s too late. We can no longer hide from this problem and pretend that it doesn’t exist. Our time is now. Their time is now.
