Jinx, You Owe Me a Soda

“Jinx, you owe me a soda,” said my eight-year-old to her little brother, as they wrestled their way into the car. “What does that mean?” he asked her. “Don’t worry about it,” she said. And with just a hint of superiority in her voice added, “You’ll understand when you’re in first grade.”

I suppressed a laugh. This made me nostalgic for those elementary school years when all the answers to life’s most important questions, such as jinxing, were at my fingertips. Not wanting my son to have to wait a full year to be brought into the loop, I asked my daughter to explain it to him. My first-grade trivia was a little rusty, and I figured I could use a refresher as well.

She went on to explain that when two people say the same thing at the same time, you can get a soda from the other person by being the first one to call “Jinx.”  Who knew? “There are rules too,” she continued. Apparently this jinxing is very serious stuff. She informed us that you can’t “Jinx” under a roof or on top of a cloud. I wondered if maybe I should be taking notes. My son chimed in, clearly excited by the prospect of this newfound wisdom, “I don’t have to wait until I’m in first grade!” he exclaimed. “I understand it now!” My daughter and I burst into a fit of simultaneous giggles. My son said, “Jinx, you both owe me a soda.”
