A Mother’s Day Card That’s More Honest Than Sweet

It’s one of Hallmark’s biggest holidays, but my kids go for homemade over store bought. Unfortunately, with that comes sentiments that are much more honest than sweet.

Being my confessional self, I was excited when a reporter from the Wall Street Journal asked me to share a card from Mother’s Day past for a piece about notes from kids offering more than syrupy—sweet sentiments. Interestingly, while Father’s day cards openly poke fun at dad, Mother’s day cards stay far away from this. But as this article (and personal experience) tells us—the kids seem to have this covered.

Mine was pretty mild to the uninformed reader—but the back story to the note written by my then seven-year-old daughter was that I’d COMPLETELY LOST my temper about something very minor and scared the bejeezus out of her with my outburst. Her card, which said “I now you are stressed but you’ll be better soon …” now sits in a frame on my desk to remind me to keep a lid on my stress—or at least keep it away from her.

I’m not the only one with a tell-it-like-it-is writer in the house. Mother of seven and founder of inspiringmoms.com, Amy Davis shares a card in which her daughter says, “I love lying on my mommy’s stomach because it’s soft and squishy like a pillow.” Oh kids. Don’t you just love ‘em?
