Just when you thought you had heard it all, a guy's, "Hi Gorgeous. Do you have a single or double door refrigerator?" message comes up on your Tinder.
If that pickup line doesn't hook, line and sink you immediately, I don't know what will. Am I right?
After ending a long-term relationship, Emmie Tsumura was about to completely swipe left to the online dating scene — and the terrible pickup lines that come with it. That is until she sketched a few of her cyber-suiters' profile pictures along with the not-so-classic lines they attempted. After sending her first few drawings to a friend, who couldn't get enough, her project, ok_cucumber, was born. This challenge was Tsumura's way of humanizing the people behind the screen and starting a conversation by looking at the world of online dating through a different lens.
While our reactions to these images are a mixture between laughing at the ridiculousness, disappointment in the seeming lack of cleverness of our generation, and repulsion at these male assumptions that women will apparently respond to anything, we love how Tsumura is using her talents to respond to her suitors, rather than feeling offended and disempowered.
Some of the pickup lines (if you can even call them that) she received were extremely offensive toward her Asian nationality...
...some were gross...
...and some were just plain weird.
While it's hard to not be taken aback by some of these images, we applaud Tsumura for giving us a chance to stop and take in the happenings in the world of online dating from an entirely different angle.
