Objekt
Despite releasing only a small handful of records since his eponymous white-label debut in 2011, Objekt has quickly become one of the most consistently lauded producers of recent years. The Berlin-based artist has garnered an enviable reputation for attention to detail, evocative arrangements and inventive, effervescent sound design, coaxing sonic features from the most unlikely of places.
His singles, from the Objekt #1-#3 white label series (2011-2013) to Hypnagogia (his 2014 split 12” with electro legends Dopplereffekt) and 2012’s Cactus/Porcupine on Hessle Audio, pointedly flout techno conventions while maintaining an unfaltering club focus. His output draws as much from Autechre, golden-era Warp and brittle, frenetic electro as it does from classic and contemporary house and techno, early dubstep, noise and experimental electronics. Flatland, his debut album, was released on PAN in 2014 and pushed further into sonic and structural experimentation than his club records were able to, without losing the musicality and physicality that made his singles so compelling. The quality control of his output has been reflected in its critical reception, Flatland for example featuring widely in the 2014 end-of-year album lists, and Ganzfeld (from Hypnagogia) scoring an unlikely #1 in Resident Advisor’s top tracks of 2014.
In parallel, Objekt has built up a reputation as not only a technically skilled but also regularly surprising and well-informed DJ. His sets, while broadly focused on techno, frequently duck and dive between the hypnotic and engrossing, incorporating off-kilter broken beats, breakneck electro, acid, noise, house, EBM and anything else necessary to illustrate his version of events, sometimes taking large jumps in tempo and drawing fully from the last 30 years of recorded electronic music.


Peggy Gou
Internationally renowned Mixmag magazine called Peggy Gou "one of the most exciting artists in the scene". That was last year, when she had only one EP. Now she has three and she was allowed to play in the mythic Berghain (a first for a Korean artist). Her mix of old school house, techno and acid with touches of Africa and Korea may seem strange, but it sounds damn good.

Born in South Korea, 27-year-old Gou is also a visual artist and classically trained musician who moved to London as a teenager. She began DJing and producing electronic music while attending the London College of Fashion. At the time, Gou was also exploring a career in fashion and contributing to magazines like Harper's Bazaar as a writer. But she soon felt like she had to make a choice between fashion and music.
Peggy Gou only released her first EP at the start of last year but already she’s emerging as one of the most exciting young artists in the scene. Her rising profile is apparent as she answers our call from a nail salon in her childhood home-city of Seoul. “Are all your questions the questions that I get all the time?” she asks before we’ve barely begun in an immediate role-reversal. There’s a lot of attention of Peggy Gou right now.
This unabashed approach to life is a driving force behind Peggy’s success, as she pushes herself head first into new experiences and builds relationships with influential figures. Peggy’s parents sent her to live in London at the age of 14 following concerns about her school performance, and there she had to adapt to an alien culture and make her way through a vastly different education system.
She’d always been interested in dancing and dance music and began DJing while studying fashion at university, but it was the gift of Roman Flügel’s ‘Fatty Folders’ from a friend that introduced more underground sounds into her world. “I was like ‘What the fuck is this!’” she tells me, “I didn’t know what it was but it sounded so amazing.” An intense passion was born, and she began to regularly shop at Phonica Records and branched out her clubbing visits beyond the more commercial side of things, never missing a single Flügel date while living in the city.
Under the tutelage of Highlife artist Esa, a connection made in Corsica Studios, and with the backing of her classical piano training, she began to produce. After completing her degree she decided that fashion was not something that could be effectively taught and applied to a music school, but had her visa rejected because the course level was a step down in terms defined by the UK government.
A move to Berlin followed, and seeking a new mentor Peggy found two in Italian duo Nu Guinea. Lucio Aquilina trained her to achieve a more analogue sound, and at the same time landing a job in a record shop expanded her musical horizons and she began to include more genres and labels in her increasingly diverse sets.
Now Peggy stands as the first female Korean DJ to play outside the country and release on internationally based labels. Across the three EPs under her belt so far (‘Art Of War’ Parts 1 & 2 on Rekids and ‘Day Without Yesterday’ on Phonica White) she’s expertly weaved together influence from old-skool Chicago house, Detroit techno, acid and sounds from across the continent of Africa into weighty grooves that are filled with soul. Thomas Numan
Thomas Numan is the founder and one of the resident DJ of Synthetic. He got indulged by house music and the vibrant clubbing culture of the mid 90s. When he moved to London in the end of the same decade, he came across new sounds that were totally relevating for him. The strong local Techno scene and the Electro/electroclash revival, started shaping a new personal direction. A few years later, he started buying records and got his hands on his first turntables. Soon after, he began organizing parties both in London and his hometown, Thessaloniki.
Since returning there, he got busy playing vinyl only DJ sets and throwing underground parties. His musical style is beyond specific genres. His moto is that ‘there is always the right music, for the right place and time’. The same principle about musical versatility applies to his recent project, called Synthetic. The mobile party organization has most notably presented artists like Juan Atkins, Robert Hood, Surgeon, DVS1, Steffi, Helena Hauff, Gerd Janson, Legowelt, Delano Smith & Palms Trax among many more.
