Shoulders vs. Cleavage

So there I am in my office working away at whatever orders I had for the day and in comes my supervisor. Now my job was not professional by any means. It was as relaxed and boring as ever. So he walks in and says to me, “Just so you know, you’re not supposed to wear shirts like that to work so next time wear something that covers.” What was I wearing? A racer back top that showed a little too much shoulder I suppose. He walked out and then I got angry.

This workplace allows one to wear blue jeans and t-shirts to work. If I may repeat myself, it was by no means professional. Ok, so why am I mad? Because that very day another older woman walked into work wearing more “professional” clothing, but was letting those mountainous regions be exposed to all who may look. Now I didn’t want to get anyone in trouble so I never said anything. To be honest, I could care less if she exposed her goods to the world. I simply wanted to wear something comfy to work since I didn’t have any ventilation in my office, other than an old fan. But was anything said to Lady Cleavage? Not at all. But me on the other hand, the one that covered all but the shoulders got iced. Besides, it didn’t pay enough for me to tell me to get new clothes.

Ok so that was around two years ago. I’ll update you fast. I quit that job because I was moving. A year later I got another job, finally. What happens? The same exact scenario!

A pretty, young woman wears a very revealing dress. I have no problem with it. I wear a t-back (dumb me). Who gets a scoff and a dirty look? No, not Miss Flaunt Whatcha Got! Little ole me. Like I said, I have no problem with people wearing what they want to, but when I get fussed at even though I’m completely covered and the little ladies that wear push-up bras and v-necks don’t get a talking to, it kind of gets under the skin.

It was worse this time because my supervisor was wearing a mini-skirt and also had her breasts exposed when she gave me the, “I can’t believe you’re wearing that” look. Oh no I’m showing off my shoulders, I better not buy this shirt! Oh wow my boobs look ten times bigger in this shirt, it’ll be great for work! Total opposite ends of the spectrum. I’m all for wearing what you like. I’m all for not getting your co-workers in trouble. So what’s a girl to do when there’s a double standard? Shut up and work. I could argue, but I like the money. I could complain, but I also like my co-workers. I try not to let it bother me, but the fact that shoulders are considered more inappropriate to show off than tatas is beyond me! I’m not a boobie hater! I just think the workplace of all places should be a bit more consistent. What do you think?
