I often hear from clients that they are hesitant to follow their passion because of fear. Some are afraid of losing a stable income, some are afraid that they won’t be successful and others are afraid that they won’t actually like following their passion full time. So, the question is, how do you test drive your dream job?
1. Find a mentor: Start talking to people you know who are already in this industry. Or if you don’t know anyone already working in the industry, find people online. You’d be amazed how many people love helping others especially when it comes to following your dream. Ask this person all of the burning questions you have, see if you can follow them for a day or perhaps you can help them with a project free of charge.
2. Volunteer: Right now more than ever, volunteers are needed. This is a great opportunity to practice your work in giving to those in need. Let’s say that you have always wanted to be a writer, volunteer to write articles for your local paper for free. Or maybe you want to be a musician, find a local organization that teaches music to underprivileged kids.
3. Free for Friends: Offer your services to your friends for free. Want to be a chef? Offer to host a private dinner party for your friends where they pay only for the cost of the food. Want to be a photographer? Offer to photograph your friend’s wedding or children for free.
If there is something that you are passionate about, don’t hide behind the state of the economy. There are “safe” ways to get your feet wet. The only thing holding you back is you.
