Who’s Helping You Get from Here to There?

“Mentor: Someone whose hindsight can become your foresight.”—Unknown

Mentor. It’s a term that is often saved for those in their twenties who are just starting out in their careers. But what about the rest of us? Who’s watching out for us and our career? Who is helping us get from where we are now to where we want to be?

The front page of the Style section of the Sunday New York Times last week covered a group of women who have made a living helping people create a network of mentors. One of the people that struck me was Gabrielle Bernstein who has created an online community called Her Future which provides mentors for all areas of life. It also allows you to be a mentor. I love the idea of being able to reach out to someone across the country or across the world to provide knowledge or guidance when it might otherwise be unavailable.

When you think about your own career and your goals for where you want to be in five years, it is important to have a mentor that can help you to get there. When shopping around for who would be a good mentor, be sure to look for someone who has:

  • Found success in their career
  • Discovered how to lead a balanced life
  • Established a strong network of relationships in your industry

While we like to think that we can do everything ourselves, it is important to remember that there is much to be learned from others who have done before us. You’d be surprised how willing people are to help others so when looking for a mentor, reach high.
